In 1899,John Walter Christie established the Christie Iron Works to construct and refurbish strengthened gun turret components for U.S. and British warships, and with the proceeds built a state-of-the-art machine shop in Manhattan. Shortly after, Christie began to work on a line of automobiles, and a metal lathe developed for his maritime machining work inspired him to focus his efforts on vehicles driven by the front wheels. Christie felt that an automobile drive system should pull the vehicle like a train and not push it like a boat. Christie focused on a front-wheel drive system in which the engine was situated transversely between the front wheels. He believed this arrangement would create light, simple, high-speed auto. Christie’s front-wheel drive car was the first of its kind built in the United States.

Voorwiel aandrijving :D, daar heb ik nog een prachtige herinnering aan.
Bijna alle auto's hadden achterwielaandrijving. Ik moest eerst naar mijn winkel en dan door naar de hogeschool.
Om dit te kunnen halen had ik een lelijke eend aangeschaft. één van de weinige auto's met voorwiel aandrijving.

Begint het toch in die nacht te sneeuwen, ik met mijn autootje de A9 op.
Staan daar allerlei auto's vast in de sneeuw :rolleyes:, mijn eendje met zijn voorwiel aandrijving trok zich overal doorheen.
Daar stonden ze dan met hun dure Mercedes. :eek:

Toen ik op school was hoorde ik dat de Velsertunnel /A9 was afgesloten omdat er vele auto's gestrand waren.
Sinds dien was de lelijke eend mijn held :D

Naderhand kwamen er van die ronde capsules :)(Y)
